Staying in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) without spending too much is easy. Located in the south of Vietnam, it’s the largest and most populated city in the country and also the most modern, so you won’t be short of hotels to sleep in Ho Chi Minh City! Named after the national hero, it has experienced some of the most important episodes in Vietnam’s history, such as the fall of Saigon in 1975. In this post we tell you the best areas and hotels to stay in Ho Chi Minh City.

Where To Stay in Ho Chi Minh

We also have a post about the things to do in Ho Chi Minh City so you don’t miss any of its attractions.

Our top choice for a hotel in Ho Chi Minh City : During our stay in Ho Chi Minh City we stayed 4 nights at the Orchids Saigon Hotel. It is in District 3, less than 10 minutes walk from the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. Considering its value for money it is one of the best in the city. We highly recommend it

How many days is it advisable to stay in Ho Chi Minh City?

Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in the country and is full of attractions. Not only in the city limits, but in the outskirts there are must-see places like the Cu Chi Tunnels or the Mekong Delta.

We recommend staying in Ho Chi Minh City for at least three nights to get to know the city’s highlights and make an excursion. In two days you will have enough to visit museums, markets, churches and so on. And another one you can book for a combined tour to the Cu Chi tunnels and the Mekong Delta. If you have more days, it is better to do these tours separately to enjoy them longer.

WHERE TO STAY IN HO CHI MINH CITY: BEST AREAS AND HOTELS

Dong Khoi (District 1), the most exclusive area to stay in Ho Chi Minh City

Dong Khoi

Dong Khoi is the most famous street in Ho Chi Minh City. It is located in District 1, the heart of the city. It was already the center of glamour during the French occupation. At that time it was called Rue Catinat.

The street crosses the old colonial quarter and runs from the Saigon Cathedral to the river. It passes by some of the most emblematic places in the city such as the Opera House or the Central Post Office. It is the center of Ho Chi Minh City’s commercial life. Here you will find the main shop windows, luxury restaurants and, of course, its best hotels.

Sleeping in Dong Khoi has many advantages but also some disadvantages. First of all, sleeping there will keep you close to everything. You’ll have a wide variety of restaurants nearby, great shopping malls like the Saigon Center… You won’t be bored! Besides, some of the best rooftops in Ho Chi Minh City are concentrated in this area, so there’s nothing like ending a day of sightseeing with a good cocktail in your hand and watching the sun go down behind the city!

But keep in mind that this area is by far the most expensive place to stay in Ho Chi Minh City. Not only because of the location, but also because the big 5-star hotels predominate. The restaurants are also usually more expensive than in other areas, although in Ho Chi Minh you will find options for all tastes and budgets.

Without a doubt, this is one of our favorite areas to stay in Ho Chi Minh City.

Ben Thanh Market and surroundings (District 1), a fun area to sleep in Ho Chi Minh City

Ben Thanh Market

The Ben Thanh market is one of the main emblems of the city. It is located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City and offers all kinds of products: from fresh food to imitation clothes that look real. If you like to haggle, we are sure you will fill your suitcase!

Being such a tourist area, you will not lack for hotels to choose from. And the main advantage of sleeping in this area is that you’ll still be centrally located and the hotels will cost you considerably less than in Dong Khoi. Besides, there are very modern and interesting hostels for those who want to save money. The shops of the big international brands you can find in Dong Khoi are transformed into small local shops in Ben Thanh.

And at night the area gets a fantastic atmosphere. Without a doubt, one of the smartest areas to stay in Ho Chi Minh City.

Our recommendations in the area:

Silverland Yen Hotel
Fusion Suites Saigon
The Hammock Hotel Ben Thanh

District 3, if you’re looking for a modern and affordable hotel

District 3

One of our favorite areas to stay in Ho Chi Minh City is District 3. There you will find quality hotels for half the price of Dong Khoi. And the location is not bad at all! In fact, you’re only a 15-minute walk from downtown. To give you a price reference, a hotel of the same style in Dong Khoi will cost you about 200 Euros while in District 3 you will find it for just over 65 Euros per night. So we think it’s one of the smartest areas to stay in Ho Chi Minh City.

Also District 3 is a vibrant area full of young people. Every night in and around Turtle Lake there is a lot of atmosphere. Besides good hotels you will also find plenty of restaurants and parks to disconnect from the hustle and bustle.

As far as tourism is concerned, District 3 also offers many attractions. For example you will be close to the Museum of War Remains or the beautiful pink church.

Pham Ngu Lao Street (District 1), the area for backpackers and nightlife lovers

Pham Ngu Lao Street

This street is located in the westernmost part of District 1 and is popular as the favorite place for backpackers to stay in Ho Chi Minh City. In fact, it is known as Backpacker Street. In Pham Ngu Lao you will find plenty of western restaurants, tour operators and especially cheap hostels – everything a tourist needs! So if you are on a budget, it is one of the best areas to sleep in Ho Chi Minh City.

It is also one of the most touristy areas of the city. You’ll find a hostel every 10 meters and many try to take advantage of it to steal by tugging on the bike, so you have to be careful!

It’s in District 1 and has a prime location. If you like to walk, you can visit most of Ho Chi Minh City’s attractions on foot. And if you like to party, you will find many bars with very good beer prices. Enjoy the city!

District 2, if you are looking for a quiet stay

District 2

Yes. Even in Ho Chi Minh City, you can have a peaceful stay. Despite the chaotic traffic in the city, there are areas where one can breathe a little peace and quiet. And one of them is District 2.

In this area, on the other side of the river, you can find quiet and simple resorts. The main advantage of this district is that you will be only 6 kilometers away from the center but in some accommodations you will have the feeling of being in a paradisiacal place because of its tranquility.

The variety of hotels is not very large since it is not an attractive area for tourists. That has some advantages, especially as far as the price is concerned. It is one of the most economical areas to stay in Ho Chi Minh City. Also the traffic is not as chaotic as in the city center, so you can be more relaxed.

You will also only be about 20 minutes away from the city centre by taxi. Depending on where you stay in District 1 or 3, you can already lose this time when you return to the hotel to make the half distance. The good thing about District 2 is that there are hardly any traffic jams.

However, there are a few drawbacks you should be aware of. In general, it is a pretty boring district. There is not much entertainment or tourist attractions. So if you’re into partying, it’s not one of the best areas to stay in Ho Chi Minh City. This district is home to many elderly expatriates who are looking for a quieter life in old Saigon.
