How to extend a Vietnam visa?

A visa extension is required if you wish to stay in Vietnam for a longer duration than is allowed by your current visa. This process is available for countries that fall under visa exemption in Vietnam.

This means that you will require an extension stamp on your passport. This stamp has to indicate the revised duration of stay. However, the visa extension is available only for single entry travelers.

You can apply for a visa extension directly at the Vietnam Immigration Department. Alternatively, you can visit the Vietnam visa website to apply.

The following steps need to be followed to extend a Vietnam visa:

Step 1: A soft copy of the passport and the page with the current Vietnam visa should be sent to the authorities. They will decide whether your visa can be extended or not and inform you about the same.

Step 2: If you are eligible for a visa extension, the original passport has to be sent to the Vietnam Immigration Department. The payment for extending your Vietnam visa should be made along with this.

Step 3: You will receive your passport with the extended visa within eight business days. For urgent cases, it will be returned within 3 working days. Urgent cases need to be specified and requested while applying for the extension.

Vietnam visa extension duration

The application for a visa extension has to include the duration. According to the type of visa you hold, the duration of extension varies. These apply as follows:

  • For visa-exempt travelers, the original duration can be extended for up to 3 months.
  • If you hold a tourist or business visa with a duration of 1 month, the visa extension can be for up to 3 months.
  • An original 3-month tourist or business visa can be extended by 3 months.
  • A 5-year original visa exemption certificate can be extended for up to 6 months.
  • An original e-visa can be extended for up to 3 months.
  • A US passport holder with a 1-year visa can be granted an extension of 3 months.
  • APEC Business Travel Card holders with temporary stay can extend for up to 3 months.
